I have heard some good things about Krita, but tbh I fall into habits rather quickly, so I'll personally stick to what I've got. I've only used Adobe Illustrator+Photoshop (at school), SAI and GIMP before. I just learned that Krita layers and masks system are far, and far more powerful than Photoshop. It's not a problem for me as I'm a product designer student. It's ok for painting, but IMHO, that's the weakest part of Krita when it is slow in big canvas and at 1000px. To use Krita as a photo editor, one must learn about gmic, filter brush engine, clone brush engine, nondestructive editing of Krita, CMYK, deep color, channel modification within Krita. Krita has just about everything in GIMP and more. I'd probably would just run Krita on wineskin if I had to use Mac. note to lostinherfantasies, if you really want you can run SAI on a Mac through the use of a wineskin, but it's a bit troublesome.

If you really need something in CMYK form, you need to download another program add-on of sorts, as it natively only has RGB and Grayscale colour settings. Well, I've only been using GIMP since June last year, and it has only 'crashed' once (due to a sudden automatic Mac download, right after I'd saved my work thankfully, thanks apple) but it does still have some problems with it e.g. It's free and can be found online (just google 'GNU Image Manipulation Program'). GIMP might be confusing at first but there are a bunch of tutorials, and instructional stuff on the website if you decide to check it out. I think PhotoShop's layout is similar to GIMP's so if you've used PS before it might be simpler to switch to GIMP. The lineart in GIMP is a bit rougher unless you go to really high res, and unless you have a drawing tablet of some sort pen pressure can't be imitated exactly, so you might prefer SAI for lines. To get pen pressure, all you have to do is to click the small usb icon at the top right icon on the toolbar of parallels. You could try out GIMP, I found it fairly simple to get used to after I switched from SAI. follow all of the instructions in the paint tool sai link above! open the downloaded sai file ON YOUR PARALLELS DESKTOP. So the first important thing to do is to download sai ON YOUR MAC DESKTOP.

after that, when parallels starts running windows, it’ll ask you which kind of windows to run.

next, open parallels then choose the windows iso file from inside parallels. Okay so in order to run sai on your mac, you’ll need to download:įirst thing you gotta do is to download alllll of those. Just to clarify, none of these have viruses or anything so no need to worryy! So since a number of people have been asking me how i got sai on my mac, and since i struggled for a looong time, i decided to write a post to help my fellow artists!
